One dead, one injured in I-80 rollover

(Carbon County, WY) – A one vehicle rollover crash was reported at 8:10 AM on Friday, November 12th, that resulted in one injury and one fatality, according to a Wyoming Highway Patrol preliminary report.

The deceased has been identified as the passenger of the vehicle, 18-year-old Idaho resident Bayron Amaya Torres.

The report states the vehicle was headed eastbound on Interstate 80 in the left lane, where at approximately milepost 212.8, the vehicle crossed a bridge deck and entered a slight left curve.

The bridge deck was icy, and the driver lost control while crossing.

The vehicle then exited the roadway on the left side, where the driver overcorrected back to the right, then went into a driver side leading skid, and tripped prior to entering the roadway.

The vehicle rolled multiple times and came to rest on top of the cable barrier, with each occupant being ejected during the rollover.

Both were transported to the hospital, where Torres succumbed to his injuries.

The condition of the driver is currently unknown.

No possible contributing factors were listed, but the report did indicate seat belts were not in use, and that road conditions were icy and frosty.

To date, there have been 98 fatalities on Wyoming’s roadways in 2021, compared to 118 in 2020, 136 in 2019, and 105 in 2018.
