Nope, No Way, Nada, Not here… County says no to Teton County request

(Lander, Wyo.) – The Fremont County Commissioners Tuesday left no doubt of their opinion of a Teton County request to take animal carcasses across county lines to local landfills.

“We’re not interested in taking other county’s animals with Chronic Wasting Disease and putting them in our landfill,” Chairman Travis Becker said in response to a communication from neighboring Teton County, which was proposing a “regional” carcass disposal plan. “I’m not opposed to discussing this, but…”

Commissioner Jennifer McCarty agreed with Becker. McCarty is the liaison with the Fremont County Solid Waste Disposal District, and she said that request came up their Monday’s meeting.

Commissioner Larry Allen said he had no problem taking care of animals within Fremont County, but not from other counties.

County Clerk Julie Freese said she would draft a letter for the commissioners declining the opportunity to take the animals from Teton County.

Starting last year, the Solid Waste District began taking animal carcasses from deer, elk and moose that were found dead on private property harvested by hunters, or killed on the highways without charge.
