No new West Nile Virus detected in local mosquito pools this past week; One person infected

(Lander, Wyo.) — There was no West Nile Virus in the mosquito traps sampled this week from Fremont County, but Hot Springs County sent samples and one positive test was noted there, according to Fremont County Weed & Pest District Supervisor Aaron Foster.

A total of 18 culex mosquitos, the carriers of the disease, were noted in Lander while five were noted in Riverton in that city’s last tested pool. In Hot Springs County, there were over 1,000 Culex captured, but WNV was found in only one of five sampled areas.

Earlier this week, the Wyoming Department of Health reported the first case of a human adult infected with the disease, and that person was reported as a Fremont County resident. The mosquito season is still ongoing and officials urge residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Learn more here.
