New National Technical Honor Society starting at Riverton High School

(Riverton, Wyo.) – A new National Technical  Honor Society at Riverton High School is similar to that of the National Honor Society, but the new honor will be for students in Career and Technical (CTE) Education.

The new honor society was approved by the  district’s board of trustees at its regular January meeting. RHS will be the only high school in Wyoming participating in this program.

RHS Activities Director Reggie Miller told the board that there is a new emphasis on CTE at the state level, “and this is a way we can celebrate our completers and promote Career and Technical Education. It’s similar to the National Honor Society for academic achievement, but for CTE students, including those in hands-on programs such as wood shop, auto shop and others.”

Instructor Nichole Farrar and Taylor Haley presented the specifics of the club. “We want to recognize students for the efforts they put into high school,” Farrar said. She said there is a fee attached to the program, of $30 per student. “We are investigating how to f ind the fee, perhaps with scholarships.”

It was explained that with the newly amended Hathaway Scholarship Program, RHS CTE students will be recognized for being in an honor society and qualify for a higher level scholarship.

The society membership includes a stole and cords for recognition at graduation, just like the NHS.

The new program will start this spring semester. The students eligible for induction in the new honor society would have to excel in their CTE classes, will be nominated by their teachers and have to meet certain criteria set by the high school.
