    Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen shared a monthly update at the Fremont County Commissioners’ meeting this morning.

    It was noted during the update the officer-involved shooting on September 21st, 2019 will have an inquest in about 6 to 8 weeks.

    Below are the current statistics for Fremont County:

    248 recorded deaths for Fremont County so far in 2019.

    • 118 of those deaths were Coroner cases. That number has increased by 8 compared to this time last year.

    Non-natural cases (accident, homicide, suicide, undetermined) make up 39% of the total Coroner cases (19 more non-natural deaths compared to this time last year)

    • 29 accidental deaths (8 more than this time last year) – 17 involve drugs and/or alcohol
      • 9 – motor vehicle related
      • 6 – falls
      • 6 – direct drug/alcohol toxicity
      • 2 – drowning
      • 2 – asphyxia
      • 1 – carbon monoxide
      • 1 – hypothermia
      • 1 – fire death
    • 10 suicides (6 more than this time last year) – 7 involve drugs and/or alcohol
    • 7 homicides (5 more than this time last year) – 6 involve drugs and/or alcohol

    11 vehicular deaths so far in 2019 (4 more than this time last year)

    • 9 were drug and/or alcohol related
    • 2 pedestrian deaths
    • 1 ATV death
    • 5 of 6 in vehicles were not wearing safety restraints where they were available

    Drugs & Alcohol:

    • Account for 29% of all Coroner cases and 65% of non-natural deaths.
    • Total cases (natural and non-natural deaths) most common drug related: 35 alcohol, 12 cannabis, 9 methamphetamine, 3 prescription drugs
    • No opiate related deaths so far this year

    Budget Update:

    For the 1st fiscal quarter the Coroner’s office is 2% over budget. Contractual services and autopies (31.2%) and deputy overtime (49.9%) are the main causes of overages. This is due mostly to the types of cases and when they occur. I.e., increase in non-natural deaths.
