Lander Swimmers & Divers Face Tough Buffalo Team on the Road

    By Susan Gray Gose

The Lady Tiger swimmers and divers suffered narrow defeats to a feisty Buffalo team over the weekend at meets in Cody and Powell. Buffalo won all three relays at both the Cody Pre-Invite on Friday and the Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday. Because the relays score twice as many points as individual events, the deficit proved too much for Lander.

The defending state-champion Tigers were ahead of Buffalo by one point on Saturday before the final 400-yard freestyle relay. Spectators erupted into deafening cheers as the teams battled each other, but Buffalo proved too tough, racing to the fastest 3A time for the season in 3:50. Lander’s squad of seniors Olivia Fowler, Leah Brown, and Lily Gose, and sophomore Ashlon Koch, had to settle for second with the second-fastest 3A time of 3:56.

The final team scores were Buffalo 260, Lander 255.5, and Powell 249, among nine teams. After the meet, Head Coach Shawna Morgan said she felt more excitement than defeat from the loss. It’s still early in the season, she pointed out, and her team is increasing workouts and feeling motivated.

“Saturday’s meet was one of the most exciting I’ve coached,” said Morgan. “I knew both Buffalo and Powell were going to be tough this year, and I’m pretty pumped that we were right there with them. On the way home, the girls were talking about how they needed to work harder and how they were really going to have to fight for it if they wanted to win State this year. It was extremely positive, and I’m pumped for this week’s practices.”

Highlights for the Tigers were three new state qualifiers for the team. Sophomore Tori Newton and senior Li Platz qualified in diving on Friday. On Saturday, sophomore Asha Reid qualified in the backstroke.

“I’m most excited about our new state qualifiers,” said Morgan. “We are up to 11 with more girls closing the gap. It’s going to take numbers to win state this year. We also qualified more events for the girls who already qualified, which makes for better number games.”

As of now, senior Olivia Fowler has qualified in all eight swimming events, including posting the top 3A time in the backstroke. Sophomore Ashlon Koch has qualified in all eight events and holds the fastest 3A butterfly time. Senior Lily Gose has qualified in seven events. Senior Makayla McPherson has five. Sophomore Lainy Duncan has four. Senior Leah Brown has three. Senior Li Platz, sophomore Kristen McPherson, and freshman Lillyan Hamilton have two. And sophomores Tori Newton and Asha Reid each have one.

Athletes can only compete in two individual events and two relays at State, but having more athletes qualified in multiple events gives the coaches more options for maximizing points.
