LVHS Swimmers and Divers Tops Riverton Pre-Invite

The Lady Tigers won only five of 12 events at the Riverton Pre-Invite on Friday, but the team’s depth could not be matched by the competition from Lyman and Riverton. Lander dominated the scoreboard with 427.5 points to runner-up Lyman’s 330.5 and Riverton’s 241.
Sophomore Ashlon Koch raced to a pair of wins for Lander in the 200-yard I.M. and the 100-yard backstroke. Her times were fast enough to place her at the top of the 3A-State ranking in the backstroke and second in the I.M. Senior Olivia Fowler added the only other individual win, taking first in the longest race, the 500-yard freestyle. Lander’s 200-yard freestyle relay (Leah Brown, Lillyan Hamilton, Lily Gose, and Koch) and 400 yard freestyle relay (Fowler, Brown, Gose, and Koch) took the other wins.
“It was nice seeing Lyman this weekend,” said Coach Shawna Morgan. “They have some quick kids, and I wanted to see how we stacked up against them and their relays. They weren’t swimming their strongest lineup–like us, they were going for qualifying times in other events. I was pleased with our performance.”
Morgan was also pleased with Lander’s divers, who placed 2nd (Tori Newton), 3rd (Grace Flint), 4th (Li Platz), 6th (Tanisha Hootch), and 7th (Skyler Woodruff). “I was really excited with our diving performances,” Morgan said. “Our divers get stronger every week.”
The team’s success came on top of increasingly difficult workouts. “Last week, we had some harder practices, so we can get in shape,” said Morgan. “It was our first week of dry land, and that left the girls pretty sore.”
The team travels to Cody for a quad-meet this Friday and onto Powell on Saturday for a larger invitational. “We’ve got two big meets coming up, and we’ll get to see Buffalo for the first time,” said Morgan. “They have some studs, so it should be fun.”
