Lady Tigers Lead 3A Teams at Jackson Meet

    By Susan Gray Gose

At over a mile high and facing the fastest 4A swim team in the state, the Lander girls swimming and diving team toughed it out for second place at the Adam Denton Memorial Invite in Jackson over the weekend. The Tigers, who have been battling illness and mounting fatigue, finished a distant second to powerhouse Laramie, who won the 4A State championship last year and saw two swimmers shatter Jackson’s pool records at this meet. But Lander topped its 3A rivals from Sublette and Lyman, as well as 4A-host Jackson.

“It was another good weekend for the Tiger swimmers and divers,” said head coach Shawna Morgan. “I was most proud of how the girls stepped it up on the second day.

This meet was organized to prepare the girls for conference and state by having prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday. They had to get used to circle seeding and swimming fast in the first day in order to make it to the second day.” The majority of Lander’s athletes qualified for the finals on Saturday, including younger swimmers. Morgan praised the efforts by some of the freshmen, who are still getting used to the team’s double workouts and dry-land training.

“Katelyn Brinda cut eight seconds on Saturday from her prelim time on Friday in the 500-yard freestyle. That’s huge and a perfect example of how the girls stepped it up on day two. Another highlight was the 400-yard freestyle relay where Lainy Duncan swam a great leg to out touch Jackson, Sublette, and Lyman.”

Another bright spot, Lander diver Li Platz qualified to dive in the finals, as the first Tiger to secure 11 required dives. The senior finished 10th in a tough field, packed with experienced 4A athletes.

“This meet was the first for us with an 11-dive format, and Li had a great day-two moving from 12th to 10th place overall. We are getting stronger every week.”

Lander’s lone win went to sophomore Ashlon Koch, who took first in the 100-yard backstroke. While settling for second, Lander’s 200-yard freestyle relay team dropped more than two seconds from its entry time. Senior Olivia Fowler also raced to second in the 200-yard freestyle.

Morgan hopes the team can put illness and aches and pains behind them in coming weeks. “Hopefully the illness and injuries will taper off, and we can start bringing our entire team to meets,” she said. “I can’t believe we are already half way through the season. It’s time to really start honing our skills and step it up in practice. I look forward to our two home meets this weekend as we always swim well for our home crowd.”

Lander hosts Riverton and Rawlins at 4 p.m. on Friday. All spectators are welcome to come cheer on the team. On Saturday, a Worland invitational was cancelled, so Lander will host a meet with a start time that was not released by press time.
