(South Pass, WY) – The Friends of South Pass recently received a gift of $1,100 from the South Pass Outpost #1867 of The Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus. The funds are for the restoration of the Smith Sherlock Company Store at South Pass City State Historic Site.
South Pass Outpost #1867 is a fraternal group founded in the gold mining camps of California and dedicated to preserving western history. Each year they host a very popular Halloween Haunted House; proceeds from that event go to local non-profits and charities.
Currently, the Friends of South Pass are raising funds for the restoration of the Smith Sherlock Company Sore at South Pass City. Opened in 1897, the Smith Sherlock Company Store was the main mercantile for SPC and offered goods from all over the world.
The South Pass Outpost #1867 donation will be matched by the Friends of South Pass, the department State Parks, and Cultural Resources, and the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund.
The restoration will include a reconstruction of the 1913 telephone exchange, historic products, and historic lighting. Work will begin in the summer of 2021 with the store reopening in 2022.
