Lawmakers approve Wyoming school bus ticketing bill; Now headed to Governor’s desk

Senate File 80, sponsored by Affie Ellis of Laramie County, reached approval in the Wyoming House this week by a 36-20 vote.

According to KGAB Radio Cheyenne, the bill would allow for motorists to be ticketing for passing school busses who have red lights flashing, if photos of the cars taken from a bus camera show the image of the vehicle’s license plate number.

Currently, the law allows for tickets if the school bus camera catches a clear photo of the vehicle’s driver. The new bill would loosen restrictions on who and how the fines could be delivered. Violators would face up to a $195 fine. The proposal now heads to Governor Mark Gordon’s desk.

Supporters argue that tougher laws are needed to protect children. Opponents argue the bill could force defendants to prove their innocents rather than being proven guilty if they were not driving a vehicle registered to their name.
