Last chance swim meet complete as swimmers head to state

    Submitted by Tamara Anderson

On Thursday, October 29, the LVHS Swim and Dive team hosted their last girls’ meet of the season, the annual Last Chance Meet.  This meet gives athletes one last competition to try to achieve a state qualifying time and/or refine technique.  Teams from Cody, Powell, Riverton, and Worland sent athletes to compete against the Lander girls.

No new athletes from Lander achieved qualifying times at this meet, although not for lack of effort.  Those girls who were so close, will build on their experience and will surely compete for spots next year.

Coach Shawna Morgan, talked about the difficulties this season.  “This season has definitely had its challenges.  2020 came with new restrictions, new protocols and a new “normal”.  For the first time we’ve had to leave our teammates (family members) at home due to limited team sizes at meets which I feel …[could]…split a team apart.  However, these girls have risen above all of this “new normal” stuff to exceed expectations.  The seniors have led their team with grace and poise, keeping us coaching on edge with what they accomplish each and every week!”

All four seniors on the team, Jenny Bautz, Sierra Firth, Kristen McPherson, and Skyler Woodruff, qualified for the state meet.  They will lead the group of 17 that will travel down to Laramie this week.  Joining them will be: juniors Asha Reid and Ashlon Koch; sophomores Theresa Bautz, Katelyn Brinda, Lainy Duncan, Divya Forbis, Lillyan Hamilton, Annabelle Nachazel, and Sophie Shearin; and freshmen Emily Anderson, Maddie Flint, Josey Johnson, and Sharon McMahon.

Coaches Shawna Morgan, Tim Hester, and Faith Hamilton are proud of the depth of this team, even after graduating a powerful class last year.  Morgan says, “As per Lander traditions, we did not rebuild this year, we have reloaded and we are ready to show the state what we are made of this week at state.  Seventeen of the twenty-two girls who participated this year have qualified for the state meet!  3A is stacked this year with individual talent and the team that tapers the best and gets their depth into the top 12 is going to be the team standing on the top of the podium at the end of the meet on Saturday.  We had to make some training changes this year, but the girls are right where we want them to be headed to state.  Our tapers are legendary, some have called them “magical”.  Be ready for this team to show their magic this week!”
