Lander’s Famous Rail Car Moves To New Home
(LANDER, WYO) – Residents of Lander have surely become familiar with the historic rail car that resides at the intersection of First Street and Main. Today, crews have begun the process of moving the rail car in preparation for construction of the new Lander Visitor Center Complex which is set to be built at that location.
The rail car, which is estimated to weigh around 64,000 pounds, will be jacked up today and moved on Thursday. The car will be taken to the Lander Golf Course while construction crews work on the visitor center.
The car has resided at the intersection of first and main since 1993. According to Rajean Strube Fossen, Assistant to The Mayor of The City of Lander, Del McOmie, at that time, the city’s motto was, “where the rails end and the trails begin.” The railcar was placed at that location to mark the end of the rails.
