Kids love the Farmers Market! Here’s 10 ways to make your family trip to the market extra special

A big thank you to our sponsor Wyoming Community Bank for bringing you this content on County 10.

Lander Valley Farmers Market, City Park, 9-11:30 a.m.

The farmers market is a great place to bring your kids. It’s a great way to introduce new foods, connect them to ‘real food’ and spend quality time with them in a fun community setting. You can teach them the values of local food and community building. Here are some tips to help you get started:

    1. Have them help you make the market shopping list. You can buy eggs, bread, cheese and dairy at the market, as well as all kinds of produce.
    2. Let them pick out and buy their own food to take home. Teaching them to shop wisely and consider all the options is a great skill to have.
    3. Talk to the farmers and ask questions. What kind of chickens do you have? Do you use chemicals or pesticides? What’s the hardest thing to grow?
    4. Introduce them to new foods. There are many types of cucumbers, tomatoes, and veggies. Encourage them to TRY something new at each market.
    5. Play games. Try a scavenger hunt or have them find colors, shapes, and types of food.
    6. Teach them about the community. Talk to them about the importance of shopping local and connecting with the farmers and their community. You can make a difference by shopping local.
    7. Learn about nutrition. Did you know carrots contain vitamin A? Tomatoes are a source of vitamins C and K.
    8. Eat the rainbow! Pick out colorful foods. There’s purple, red, green, yellow and orange!
    9. Cook the food you bought together and enjoy!
    10. Make your own cloth bag to bring to the market. Buy a plain canvas bag and paint it with fruits and vegetables.

Central Wyoming Brass Band will be playing while you shop for peaches, pears, corn, tomatoes, peppers, cheesecake, jams and jellies, artisan cheese and breads, potatoes, herbs and so much more.  See you at the market!
