Lander swimmers dominate Worland event; Ready to host Bruce Gresly Invitational this Saturday

One month from now, the Wyoming State High School Class 3A Boys Swimming and Diving Championship will be contested at the Campbell County Aquatic Center in Gillette. LVHS will be a heavy favorite to capture its 23rd consecutive team title.

This Saturday, the Tigers will host the Bruce Gresly Invitational, honoring the architect of that historic state championship run whose passion for swimming and the Lander community created a culture of hard work and excellence that continues to this day.

Stakes will be high at the state meet in February. Emotions will run deep this weekend in Lander.

“Bruce was such a big part of our lives, so this meet is in honor of him,” said head coach Shawna Morgan of Gresly, who led the Tigers and Lady Tigers to 29 combined championships before his sudden passing in the summer of 2015. “Our boys really step up and perform their best because we all know that Bruce is there with us cheering us on.”

The Tigers will welcome ten teams to town for the third annual meet.

Lander outswam a seven-squad field at the Warrior Invite last Saturday in Worland, a day after outdistancing Rawlins in a dual at the Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center Friday afternoon.

Morgan said that the coaching staff experimented with relay combinations in Worland, looking ahead to potential scoring possibilities for both this weekend and the state meet.

“We wanted to try some different relays to see how they would do against other 3A schools,” Morgan explained. “Rawlins, Powell and Buffalo all have very good medley relays, so that is something we will look at going into the Bruce Gresly Invite this weekend.”

Morgan said swims as a whole were impressive in both Lander and Worland. “We swam some really fast times over the weekend!” she said. “Some of our freshman took anywhere from three seconds off of their 50 times to 26 seconds off of their 500 times! This makes those state qualifying times in reach before the end of the season, which is super exciting.”

The Tigers will host 4A Cheyenne South for a dual Friday afternoon at 4:00. The Bruce Gresly Invitational will begin at 10:00 Saturday morning.
