Rotary International has teamed with the Bill and Melisa Gates Foundation to eradicate Polio worldwide. With only two Middle Eastern Countries having active Polio cases, eradication of the disease is possible. However, due to the ease of Worldwide travel, even a single active case can re-spread the disease around the globe.
Because of elevated costs associated with reaching those still in need of vaccination and danger to those administering the vaccine, treating every one in the risk of contracting the disease is slow in coming. Consequently, Rotary still is at the forefront of raising funds to eradicate this crippling disease.

For the past few years, Lander Rotary and the Rotary-sponsored Lander High School group Interact have been raising funds locally for Polio eradication through “Paint Your Pinkie Purple Day.” For a modest donation, one of the Lander Interact students or Lander Rotarians will paint your pinkie purple to show that you have donated towards Polio eradication. Local businesses allow the “painters” to use their storefront or store as a staging area over the noon hour for the spreading of the purple paint and the collection of funds.
The color purple and the pinkie finger were chosen in the Rotary campaign as being representational of the methods used to identify those children in the Polio active countries that have received the Polio vaccine.
This year, over the lunch hour, the Rotary and Interact painters raised nearly $1100 for polio eradication. You can count on the two groups being on the street again next year, searching out pinkies that need to be painted purple for Polio.
