Lander juvenile charged with 2 counts of burglary after confessing to VFW break-ins

On Thursday, July 26th staff at the Lander VFW building reported a break-in and theft of “between 23 and 26 bottles of alcohol.”

On August 1st, the building was broken into again. But this time, the VFW had installed a camera.

A Lander Police officer investigated the second break-in and noted that there were broken windows with shards of glass all over the floor on the east side of the building. There was also damage to a fence on the northwest side of the building, and the handle of a gate had been broken.

Unlike the July break-in, there was not missing alcohol this time. However, VFW staff noted there were missing “bags of potato chips and snacks.”

LPD downloaded photos from the buildings security camera and captured two males wearing bandanas covering their faces breaking into the building at 2:58 a.m. The camera captured the suspects breaking in with what appeared to be a baseball bat, breaking the glass windows.

A Lander Police School Resource officer identified one of the suspects as a 17-year-old boy. Court documents show that while questioned, he acknowledged that he was involved in both 2018 break-ins.

Court documents show that there may have been as many as four other juveniles involved in the break-ins.

The 17-year-old waived his preliminary hearing on November 28th and his case will be transferred to District Court at a later date for arraignment.

He faces two counts of burglary, which are each punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000 each.

It is unclear at this time whether or not the LPD has captured or identified any other suspects. We have reached out to the Lander Police Department for further clarification and will add to the story when we learn additional details.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty. The identity of this suspect is being withheld at this time due to the fact that the subject is a minor.
