Lander ice rink to open Friday; skating is free this year

The Lander Parks and Recreation Department has shared their plans for the 2020-21 ice skating season which is slated to officially begin on Friday, December 18th. Skating is free this year, however, there will be no rental skates due to contact and sanitizing concerns.

Due to COVID protocols and current public health orders, things may look a little different this year. “We need to be as contact-free as possible,” Lander Parks and Rec said.

The building is closed to the public and concessions will not be available. The panels and mats will be down and we will have benches outside for people to use to change their shoes. 200 people at a time are allowed in this outdoor setting.

“Those neck gaters will come in handy to double as your mask as you skate,” said the Lander Parks and Rec Department.

The gates will be open for access from the back and front parking lots. Restroom doors will be unlocked from outside the building.

Recreation skate hours are Monday – Sunday 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Evening Rec skate hours are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. An employee will be in the building or on the ice during those official times that the rink is open to monitor activity and for safety.

General rules still apply for this season, according to the Lander Parks and Rec Department. Hockey only inside the hockey boards, no hard pucks allowed. If you need to purchase pucks, they have the soft ones in stock – call (307) 332-4647 for more information.

If you have skates you are will to donate, please contact the Parks Office at (307) 332-4647 and they can distribute them to those who need them. They will also have a box of donations that are free to the public as well. If under dire circumstances, you do not have the ability to get skates, they ask you to please call the office and they will see what they can find for you.

The skating season will end on February 1, 2021 – meaning they will no longer maintain the ice nor have the staff to monitor the rink.
