Lander girls win state 3A soccer championship

(Green River, WY) – The road wasn’t easy for the Lander Valley High School Lady Tigers, but their perseverance paid off, winning their second 3A state title of the decade.

Abilio Monteiro’s club began play Thursday against the east’s third seeded Buffalo ladies. After a 1-1 regulation draw, the Lady Tigers found the net twice in overtime, prevailing 3-1.

Friday’s game against Douglas would need extra time and a shootout to decide. LVHS won that shootout 4-3, to ultimately take a 3-2 decision.

Saturday’s title game was against a familiar foe, Cody. The Fillies knocked Lander out in the semi-finals last year, and beat them in the 2022 championship game. Lander’s last state win against CHS was during the 2021 title match. Ultimately, the Lady Tigers won by the same score they did in 2021, 2-1.

The Lander boys lost in the third place game 1-0 against Torrington. Cody’s boys won class 3A, knocking off Green River 3-0. The 4A girls championship went to Kelly Walsh, who edged Jackson 3-2 in the championship match. Riverton’s girls fell to Laramie 4-1 in the third place contest. Jackson’s boys blanked Cheyenne Central 4-0 for a 4A championship.

Congrats to the Lady Tigers, County 10 will have much more championship coverage as the week continues!
