Do you know the effects on driving that different levels of Blood Alcohol Concentration have on you?  Check out this chart from NHTSA before you decide to get behind the wheel this Holiday Season.

    BAC                                                           Effects on Driving

0.02 Decline in visual functions; decline in ability to perform 2 tasks at once.
0.05 Reduced coordination; reduced ability to track moving objects; difficulty steering; reduced response to emergency driving situations (i.e. a deer jumping in front of your vehicle).
0.08 Concentration, short-term memory loss, speed control; reduced information processing capability; impaired perception.
0.10 Reduced ability to maintain lane position and brake appropriately.
0.15 Substantial impairment in vehicle control, attention to driving task, and in necessary visual and auditory information processing.

    (Check out the website here.)

The legal limit is 0.08 or lower.  That’s the equivalent of 1 to 2 beers.  The reality is that most people drink more than that during the holidays, and frequently it is liquor, not beer.  In Fremont County alone, 1 in 4 drivers you pass is either intoxicated or distracted.  It is estimated that the actual percentage is closer to 50% on evenings during the holidays.

BE RESPONSIBLE!  Follow these tips if you know you’re going to be drinking this Christmas, or any time ever!

    • Chose a designated driver BEFORE the party starts. Stick to the plan.  Hand your keys over to your chosen DD to ensure you do not make bad decisions after you start drinking.
    • If you are hosting a party, ensure all guests leave with a sober driver.
    • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call law enforcement immediately. Your child, or the child of someone you know might be out driving at the same time – better to call law enforcement than to have them call you.
    • Wear your seatbelt! It is your first and BEST defense against drunk drivers!

Remember – when you drink, it is not only your life you are responsible for.  You are responsible for every single person on the road if you get behind the wheel while drunk.

Please be safe and Happy Holidays!
