Martin Brown Jr, was born on October 4, 1979 in Riverton, WY to Martin and Julia (Moss) Brown Sr. After his birth Martin was given the Arapaho name of White Hawk “Heeyei Nookei” by elders in the tribe. He was also baptized into the Catholic faith, his Godparents are Robert and Ursula Aragon Sr..

Martin was a member of the Native American Church and an active participant in many tribal events. Martin grew up on the Arapahoe Ranch and learned at an early age how to handle horses. Martin took pride in his work with horses. His work with horses included breaking and training, so that the horse was a good working horse, Martin also loved to rope. Martin’s education was given by the cowboys at Arapahoe Ranch but mostly by his father. His formal education he attended Thermopolis, Riverton, and Wyoming Indian schools and eventually earned a GED through Central Wyoming College.

The humbleness of Martin was always reflected in his relationships with people who knew him and the type of activities he participated in. Martin enjoyed riding horses, attending rodeos, fishing, hunting, horn hunting, being in the mountains, and just generally being in the outdoors. Martin loved to sing peyote songs and could be heard singing throughout his day. Martin was a true cowboy, he would never complain about anything, would work to get the job done, and cared for his loved ones, especially his children.

Martin’s work began with learning about ranching with his father while in grade school and throughout his life at Arapahoe Ranch. He worked for the Flying A ranch in Waltman, WY
for many years, numerous ranches around Fremont county, and as a trail guide in Jackson, WY. Martin also enjoyed working in the oil field industry, chasing drilling rigs throughout Wyoming and North Dakota as a floorhand and promoted to derrick hand.
