(Midvale, Wyo.) – A benefit ice fishing derby for a 5-year-old local boy diagnosed with diabetes is on tap this weekend at Ocean Lake west of Midvale. Half of the entry fees and all cash donations will to to the family of William Apodaca, for medical expenses and travel to Colorado for treatment.
This is the eighth year for the tournament, with a different beneficiary each year. Lou Rochlitz, owner of the Midvale Store, said the annual event usually raises about $5,000-$6,000. The tournament begins on noon January 11th and continues all day on the 12th with a wrap-up and prizes awarded on Sunday the 13th after the last weigh-in at 10 a.m. New this year is a chili cook-off competition on Sunday at 1 p.m. Well over one dozen cooks have signed up their favorite recipes, both red and green. A silent auction is also part of the benefit.
Prizes to be awarded for first, second and third largest Walleye, Perch and Ling plus the largest sucker or carp.
Sign-in occurs at the Midvale Store, at the intersection of the Eight Mile Road and State Highway 134 (Missouri Valley Road).
