Helicopters rescued injured man off of Gannett Peak last week

(Lander, Wyo.) – In his monthly report to the Fremont County Commissioners, Sheriff Skip Hornecker told of a multi-helicopter rescue of a man injured near the top of Gannett Peak last week.

Hornecker said the man had fallen in an area of boulders “not far from the summit” and that two helicopters accomplished the successful evacuation, with the assistance of ground Search and Rescue personnel. “We called in the Pinedale SAR helicopter which winched the injured Utah man off of the rocks. The bright green helicopter then used a long line to deliver the man to an awaiting medical evacuation helicopter,” he said. “The victim was a commander in the fire service in Utah and he told our people that he was amazed at the skill and speed that he was rescued at in the wilds of Wyoming. He never expected the rescue to be so comprehensive or professional.”

The man was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening injury.
