#HeadsUp: Scheduled explosives work on motorized trail near Dubois paused

(Dubois, WY) – The use of explosives to remove large boulders and rocks on Motorized Trail 14, which is located on the Wind River Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest, has been postponed due to several factors related to firefighting capabilities.

Wind River District Ranger Jeff von Kienast stated, “I am suspending blasting operations on the trail until further notice due to current and expected fire weather, potential lack of additional firefighting resources, and the remote location.”

“We have also responded to several lightning-caused fires across the Shoshone National Forest over the past three days. Because portions of the Moon Lake trail are remote and difficult to access, response times for additional firefighting resources would be delayed should we experience an ignition. Out of an abundance of caution I am, therefore, suspending these rehabilitation operations.”

The National Multi Agency Coordinating Group (NMAC) recently upgraded the National Planning Level to Level 5, which is the highest planning level, and the Rocky Mountain Region is at Planning Level 3. Firefighting resources continue to be stretched thin across the country.
