Fremont County woman to pay over $400,000 in restitution after embezzlement guilty plea

(Fremont County, WY) – Laura Burleson, 43, of Fremont County, pled guilty to 1 of the 4 Counts of “Theft – Aggregate” she was initially charged with at her May sentencing hearing overseen by Judge Jason Conder.

Burleson had originally pled not guilty to the felony charges after being arrested back in August, but as a part of a plea agreement, she then admitted to embezzling over $400,000 from her former employer, M&M Well Service, over the course of seven years.

This agreement stated that if she pled guilty to Count 1 of the 4 charges, she would face a 5.5 to 10 year prison sentence, a fine of up to $10,000, and any court ordered restitution fees.

Prosecution requested Burleson serve the full 10 years of the 5.5 to 10 year indeterminate sentence, but it was decided by the Court that the prison sentence be suspended and the fines dropped under the agreement that Burleson pay the restitution amounts in full, just over $400,000.

This restitution has to be paid in full within 3 years, during which time she will be under court ordered community supervision.

However, if Burleson does not comply with the terms and conditions of her community supervision or pay the restitution fees in full, she can still be sent to prison at a later date, and the original charges may still be applied.

County 10 will provide more updates on the case as they become available, which can be found here.
