Another first for Fremont County, the Cherry Bombs are forming the Junior Rollers, a co-ed junior league for kids ages 8-17.

County 10 chatted with Cherry Bomb Jenny Oviatt about this new addition to the local roller derby family. Jenny explained the interest in a junior league started because several

Jenny shared a six-week training camp for both the Junior Rollers and Cherry Bombs will be every Monday night starting 10/7 through 11/11 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Pavillion Rec Center. The training camp fee is $25 (this pays for space rental) and the first night is free to make sure this is something you want to pursue. Skates will be available to borrow during the camp and no experience is necessary. Jenny noted they are also in desperate need of referees. If anyone is interested in becoming a roller derby ref this training camp is a great opportunity for you as well.

Jenny noted the emotional aspect of roller derby is really amazing for everyone involved. The Cherry Bombs create a very accepting, safe and encouraging space for all women. They are excited to create this same environment for the Junior Rollers. Jenny said, “This will give kids an opportunity to be athletic and have a safe space that maybe other sports might not be for them.”

Along with a plan to form the Junior Rollers, they also recently became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and are actively searching for a space of their own in Fremont County. Finding a space locally large enough to lay down a flat track and host home games has proven difficult, shared Jenny. They currently practice at the Pavillion Rec Center and the Fremont Center at the Fairgrounds in Riverton. Their hope is to find a place to host home games and that can also be used for community events.
