Fremont County ranked least healthy in Wyoming

It’s not good news for Fremont County in a new study produced by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the University of Wisconsin Poplar Health Institue, and the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.

The groups researched data from all of Wyoming’s 23 counties and found that Fremont County is dead last when it comes to Wyoming’s healthiest counties.

Data categories included health behaviors, which includes: tobacco use, diet, and exercise, alcohol and drug use, and sexual activity. Social and economic factors like education, employment, income. Physical environmental factors, like air and water quality. And data from life expectancy and quality of life was factored in.

Data suggests that Fremont County had about 12,200 premature deaths, as opposed to the healthiest county, Teton, who had roughly 3,800. Fremont County ranked significantly higher in those with poor and fair health, poor mental health, and babies with low birthweight.

Fremont County finished last, or 23rd, in both of the major categories surveyed. Categories were called “health outcomes” and “health factors.” Factors being the circumstances in the county that may lead to good or poor health, outcomes being how residents actually fare health-wise.

Teton County was 1st, or healthiest, in both categories. Crook County took 2nd in both categories, and Park County was 3rd healthiest in health factors, and Weston County was 3rd healthiest in health outcomes.

Carbon County ranked 22nd in health outcomes, Big Horn County finished 22nd in health factors.
