Fremont County Coroner says progress being made on new county cemetery

(Lander, WY) Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen said progress is being made on the establishment of a county cemetery for the burial of unclaimed bodies at the Wyoming Life Resource Center in Lander.
Stratmoen told the commissioners the state has ordered a survey of the parcel and a final workup will soon be ready for signatures. Stratmoen said he expects the paperwork to take a month or more but that the county would have to wait for spring for good conditions for implementation and setup for use.
When the county cemetery is established, Stratmoen said state statutes allow for a simple interment without embalming or a casket, “all that is required is an adequate cover, and a body bag would accomplish that. Our only cost would be the opening and closing of a grave,” he said.
The coroner also said to have a county cemetery could help out in the event of a pandemic or mass casualty event – if only temporarily.
