    Former RHS soccer coach selected for head coach job at Simpson University

    A former California Pacific all-conference selection for Simpson and team captain for two seasons, Erly Cornejo has been named the head men’s soccer coach at Simpson University, as announced Friday by director of athletics, Tom Galbraith.

    Cornejo has spent the last three seasons in his home state as the head boy’s soccer coach at Rawlins (Wyoming) High School where he earned East Region Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and led the Outlaws to their first-ever two conference titles in 2018-19 along with a third-place finish in the state championships in 2018 before returning to Redding with his family in 2019.

    While leading his high school alma mater, Riverton (Wyoming) High School from 2009-14, his six seasons included two third-place state finishes (2010 and 2011) and three West Region Coach of the Year honors. The 2010 Riverton team finished the season ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA national high school rankings.

    In nine seasons as a head coach, Cornejo amassed a 125-86-13 record.

    This past fall, Cornejo served as an assistant coach for Shasta College. Prior collegiate coaching experience includes assistant coaching stops at Warner Pacific (Ore.) in 2014-15 and Central Wyoming College in 2005-06, each for two seasons.

    As a player and team captain in 2006, Cornejo earned all-league honors for Simpson and was the team’s captain and Rookie of the Year in 2004. The 2004 Simpson squad was the first to qualify for the NCCAA national tournament.

    While at Simpson, Cornejo majored in business administration. He finished his bachelor’s degree at Ashford University in 2011. He also works as a successful financial advisor for the last decade. He and his wife, Makayla, have two daughters, Amiah and Brielle, and a son, Cason.
