Flood season is right around the corner and considering floods are the nation’s most common natural disaster, now is a good time to check into flood insurace. Having flood insurance could be the difference between financial disaster and the ability to rebuild and repair. Just one inch of water in a home can cost more than $25,000 in damage—are you protected?
The problem is most people aren’t. Only 12 percent of homeowners have a flood insurance policy. Be sure you’re one of them by reviewing your homeowners insurance and see what’s right for you. Basic homeowners insurance doesn’t typically cover a flood. A flood policy is a standalone policy that you need to discuss with your insurance agent. Be sure to remember, flood insurance doesn’t become effective in most flood areas until 30 days after the application date.
