Tiger Swimmer and Divers Face Tough and Friendly Competitions

    By Susan Gray Gose

The Lander girls swimming and diving team experienced two extremes over the weekend: a fraught competition in Powell and a friendly rivalry at home. On Friday in Powell, the team faced a fierce Panther squad, who announced their goal at the beginning of the season to beat the state champion Tigers. On Saturday, in contrast, Lander hosted Jackson for a friendly “scramble” meet and a celebration of the team’s seniors.

Against Powell, Lander was without one of its top swimmers, sophomore Ashlon Koch, and competed against Panthers who chose to wear technical swimsuits (which improve times). In the end, Powell narrowly beat Lander by about 20 points. (Final results were not posted by this deadline.)

Lander did enjoy wins in two of the three relays, as well as in the sprint 50 and 100-yard freestyles, where senior Leah Brown prevailed, and in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, where senior Olivia Fowler trounced the competition. Another highlight for the Tigers: Sophomore Asha Reid qualified for State in her 100-yard butterfly event.

On Saturday, Lander hosted Jackson for a playful “scramble” meet, where the teams divide their athletes into mixed teams of Tigers and Broncs for an Orange and a Green team. The Green claimed victory, in part by winning two of the relay races that involved doggy paddle, stacks of kickboards, and other tricks.

The individual races remained competitive, and the Tigers saw most of the wins. Fowler claimed first in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle, Brown took the 50-yard freestyle, senior Lily Gose touched first in the 100-yard butterfly, and Koch (back in the pool) claimed the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Midway through the meet, the teams paused to celebrate Lander’s nine seniors, who were competing in their final meet at the Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center. Coaches Faith Hamilton, Tim Hester, and Shawna Morgan gave tearful hugs, while a nostalgic slideshow played in the background.

Some highlights from the seniors’ parting words to their teammates:

Anne Baron: “All of you are an important part of this team, and I am so proud of what you have accomplished so far. Keep working hard and swimming fast.”

Leah Brown: “Call your mom, overuse ‘I love you,’ and never miss out on making memories. We only have four quarters, 1,460 days. Have all the hot tub talks you can, cheer the loudest at every swim meet, and never regret making the decision to be on this team, this family–the most life-changing sport I’ve ever experienced.”

Mia Cox: “Learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable. The hardest and scariest things are the things most worth doing.”

Gracie Flint: “Never stop pushing yourself towards our goals, but remember to have fun along the way. Thank you for four amazing years that I will never forget.”

Olivia Fowler: “Remember to continue to lift each other up and love each other. Know that each of you is capable of incredible things.”

Lily Gose: “You are all the reason I swim and the reason I can say that I have 30 BFFs. When the season gets hard and you’re not feeling great, remember you also have 30 BFFs and three coaches rooting for you.”

Makayla McPherson: “Never be afraid to lean on your team even after the season because they are family, and the memories you make with them will be forever. Smile, it makes you faster.”

Li Platz: “Even though every day of the season is about waking up and driving home in the dark, trying not to fall asleep in class, and pushing through the hardest practices, it’s also about being part of something bigger than every one of us–a team.”

McKella Stigers: “The faster you learn how to dance with your lizard brain the better… Listen to Shawna, Tim, and Faith, and always include everyone on the team so they feel like they’re part of this team because the bond that we have is special to swimming.”

h/t Jessica Firth – The team gave a group hug at the end of the senior celebration.
