I’m Ember Oakley, and I am a fifth-generation Wyomingite.
My Dad was a Marine and a game warden, and my parents raised me in the backcountry of Wyoming. Yes: with a gun in my hand. I am a hunter. We raised horses and cattle, and my degree is in Agribusiness. I am all Wyoming.
Hand in hand with that, of course, is that I am an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment and gun rights. I oppose any piece of legislation that would restrict gun owners from any type or kind of firearms, magazine capacity or ammunition. I support concealed carry. I support the ownership of firearms for sport and for personal protection, and all citizens’ rights to keep and bear arms. In short, I oppose any measures that are important to Wyoming gun owners. Two years ago, I was approached by groups and legislators in regards to the stand your ground defense bill. There were problems with the first draft, as far as its workability in the context of criminal procedure. I discussed this with legislators, changes were made, and the bill passed. Not everyone understands the processes of criminal court. As a practicing criminal lawyer for a decade, I do understand it.
I will always fully and fairly discuss a bill. Every legislator, every citizen, should do so – and welcome the discussion. I will always do that.
In reality, I am posed to be a real leader for any gun legislation, as an all-Wyoming pro-gun Republican with the most extensive knowledge of criminal law in the entire Legislature. I think it would be a real shame for the people who most align with me and my values to vote against me, based on misunderstanding or misinformation.
