Driver of stolen vehicle fled scene after crashing into RPD patrol car

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

(Riverton, WY) – In the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office call log issued on May 21 there was a report of a stolen vehicle that crashed into a Riverton Police Department (RPD) vehicle, which reportedly ended up with the driver fleeing the scene.

The incident took place on East Monroe Ave., and the call was made at 2:31 AM.

Other than a report of no injuries, no further information was shared in the log.

County 10 reached out to RPD Chief Eric Hurtado, who was able to share that yesterday, May 20, RPD was investigating the theft of two vehicles in Riverton.

“Our officers arrested an 18 year-old female who was in possession of one of the stolen vehicles Monday afternoon,” Chief Hurtado commented.

Chief Hurtado went on to say that early this morning, officers on patrol spotted the second stolen car, and when they attempted to stop it, the driver fled in the vehicle.

The car then made several turns in the area of East Monroe and Skaggs Lane, Chief Hurtado explained, when the driver of the stolen car then struck the side of an RPD patrol vehicle.

The driver then fled on foot while the officer was temporarily trapped inside the patrol car. The officer didn’t sustain any injuries.

Another officer was then reportedly able to catch one of the occupants of the stolen car, and after a brief struggle, took 25-year-old Sunshine Oldman into custody for resisting arrest.

The search for the driver of the stolen car is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Don Nethicumara at (307) 856-4891.

Chief Hurtado also stated that both of the stolen cars were recovered with keys still in the ignition, and would like to advise that “residents should avoid leaving car keys in their vehicles when they park them.”
