Dental associations urge regular oral cancer examinations—early detection saves lives!

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. It’s something most of us don’t think about, but this month we’re encouraged to do just that. Oral health affects the health of the entire body. During dental check-ups, a thorough dentist will give a complete oral cancer examination. Dr. Crane at Rendezvous Dental does just that.

    Did you know?

    1. When combined with oropharyngeal carcinoma, oral cancer represents the 6th most common malignancy worldwide.
    2. The most common form of oral cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, a malignant tumor accounting for approximately 90% of all cases.
    3. High-risk sites for oral cancer include the lateral borders of the tongue and the floor of the mouth.
    4. Classic risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco and alcohol use.

The American Academy of Oral Medicine lists signs and symptoms to look for in-between dental visits.
