Fremont County Alliance Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse gave an update on their shelter project funding and also asked the board to proclaim October 2019 as ‘Domestic Violence Awareness Month’. The proclamation was signed and the board urges all citizens to recognize domestic violence as a critical issue that is everyone’s business.

The new shelter project update, after crunching numbers the most feasible option is to demolish the current shelter and build a new one that meets their needs on the property. They are hopeful the new shelter will be completed within the next two years. The estimated budget is $750,000. Their upcoming event the ‘Purple Ball’ on October 19th is kicking-off their fundraising for the new shelter. More information on the fundraiser can be found here.

New WIC Supervisor Josiah Becker met with the board for the first time and shared a program update. Josiah started as the WIC Supervisor in August. At the time, there were only approximately 550 WIC participants in Fremont County. His goal is to have around 700 participants by the end of the year. He is also looking at initiatives to decrease the amount of pregnant women who smoke, currently 20%. Fremont County has the highest rate of ‘smoking moms’ in the state, shared Josiah. He also noted that the WIC staff is quite small and they have difficulty reaching Dubois. His goal is to spend at least one day a month there to better serve Fremont County. Welcome to your new role, Josiah!

City of Riverton Community Development Director Eric Carr’s 2019 Riverton Master Plan received concurrence from the Commissioners’ and the board also approved the City of Riverton’s proposal to de-annex a portion of the city north of Country Acres Road that includes the Vasco addition to Riverton and land owned by the Brada Living Trust.
