Central basketball teams fell to Sheridan on Saturday.  The men’s team battled the 6th ranked Generals until about the 8-minute mark.  The game was within one or two possessions up to that point. Sheridan would pull away from the Rustlers with 3 point plays and three-pointers.    The Rustler women jumped out to a quick double-digit lead but couldn’t hold it as they lost their second in a row.

The Rustler women led 9-0 and had a 24 to 12 lead at one point in the first half.   Sheridan would go no a 21 to 7 run, however, and took a two-point lead into the halftime break.  From there they extended the lead and won 74 to 61.

Rylee Burmester scored 22 as she was a perfect 12 for 12 from the free throw line and had five rebounds.  Freshman point guard Tamia Cutignola netted a new career high 21 and had six steals and six rebounds. She played all 40 minutes of the game.   Essy Latu tallied 12.

Rustler coach Lindsey Fearing pointed to 28 turnovers as the chief reason for the defeat, “ Tough game, we fought hard.  Turnovers, again, were what cost us the game. We started out well but just couldn’t handle the run they made.”

The Rustler men again battled the 6th ranked team in the country tooth and nail.   Central would be within 3 to 5 points most of the second half. Sheridan would start to pull away at about the eight-minute mark getting stops on defense and converting on the offensive end with three-pointers and three-point plays.  They scored 25 points in the final 8 minutes of the game.

Coach Brad Schmit, “For the majority of the game, it was a battle.  The last eight minutes, the sophomore group from Sheridan pulled away.  Offensive rebounds and stringing stops together caught up to us.”

Darius Guinn led the scoring with 21 and 4 assists.  Connor Nelson contributed 19 with 7 rebounds and 3 steals.  Jerodda Brisco scored 11 with 10 from Devin Rottweiler. Central was 6 of 9 from the line while Sheridan connected on 22 of 30 attempts.  CWC hit 10 three pointers and had 16 turnovers. Sheridan was 5 of 27 from three-point land.
