CWC basketball opens conference play with nationally ranked Casper College Wednesday

Central Wyoming College basketball teams begin Region 9 conference play on Wednesday, January 8th when Casper College brings both of their nationally ranked teams to Rustler Gym.

The CWC men are 10-5 on the season and have won six in a row dating back to the end of the 2019 portion of their season. They’ve won 9 of their last 11 under the direction of 2nd year head coach Brad Schmidt.

The Rustler men have 6 sophomores, five of which were on the team last year.

The Casper men finished 6th in the country a year ago going 32-3 and winning the Region 9 title. They have a new head coach but have started the year 13-2 and ranked 19th in the latest NJCAA basketball poll.

This is the 24th meeting since 2008 for the men, Casper leads the series 16 to 7 and have won the last three in a row.

The Rustler women and 2nd year head coach Lindsey Fearing has a young team. They are 4 and 9 on the season. They are led by Essy Latu, a sophomore from Australia, who is averaging 19 points per game.

Casper and veteran coach Dwight Gunnare are 13 and 2 on the year and ranked 18th in the last NJCAA poll. CWC coach Fearing played for coach Gunnare at Casper College years ago.
