    Cowgirl soccer honors Lander-native who died in car crash

    Earlier this week, the Wyoming Cowgirls soccer team showed off their new t-shirts that honor former Cowgirl soccer player and Lander-native, Sancy (Florquist) Shaw.

    On Christmas Eve 2018, two people were killed in a two-vehicle accident on I-70 in Colorado near the community of Genessee. A 62-year-old woman drift off the roadway, over-corrected, and spun through the median striking Shaw’s vehicle. Following the crash an autopsy revealed that the 62-year-old woman’s blood-alcohol level was .203 and marijuana was in her system.

    Shaw was driving the opposite direction when the woman’s car struck her’s, killing her. The crash severely injured Shaw’s 6-year-old daughter, Charlee Jo. Charlee spent nearly 2 months at a children’s hospital in Denver before she was released, she still faces complications from the crash.

    Sancy was born in Buffalo, Wyoming and grew up in both Lander and Evergreen, Colorado. Ultimately she settled down in Clark, Colorado where she began a teaching career at North Routt Community Charter School and married her husband, Brett. Together they had four children, Wyatt (13), Mason (11), Jaxon (9), and Charlee Jo (6).

    She was a University of Wyoming graduate, who played soccer for the Cowgirls for four years.

    The team will wear t-shirts in support of Sancy throughout the season.

    The Wyoming soccer season begins in early August.
