(Riverton, WY) – The WNBA team, Chicago Sky, won the 2021 Championship back in October, and County 10 had the opportunity recently to catch up with assistant coach Emre Vatansever.
Emre lives in Riverton during the offseason with his wife Kristin Newlin, who is from here, and their three kiddos.
The Chicago Sky finished their regular season 16-16 and in 6th place. Emre shared he thinks they might be the first to have finished 6th and went on to win the championship.
“Somehow we just figured out how to play towards the end of the season and then the playoffs started and it was a great start. We played Dallas first round and we played Minnesota second round. And that was a qualification game; only one game. And then we played Connecticut at the semi and the Phoenix at the final.”
This is their very first championship and the first championship for a lot of the players, he noted.
“They’ve dedicated their life for this and they finally got it,” Emre said. “It’s very special.”
Now that the season is over, they enter into contract negotiations while he spends time with family here in Riverton.
“I can’t explain to them how beautiful this place is,” he shared about Riverton. “I have three kids and I think this is one of the best places to raise a kid.”
