Caution: Heavy lifting on a bad shoulder could lead to surgery
“I was cutting up an antelope, when it slipped and started to fall,” explained Alan Mcomie, recent patient of Orthopaedics of Steamboat Springs. “I went to catch it, clearly underestimating its weight.” The moment the carcass pulled on his arm, his shoulder went, Pop! “I practically did pirouettes around the garage, hollering. I knew I’d messed up my shoulder good this time,” he continued.
A shoulder surgery that he had 18 years ago left Alan more susceptible to injury. So this time around, he knew surgery was inevitable. Having known Amy Hitshew PA-C previously and after multiple recommendations from friends, Alan went to Orthopaedics of Steamboat Springs (Lander Office) to see what could be done. X-rays and an MRI revealed that he had damaged his biceps tendon, rotator cuff tendons, and had several bone spurs.
Dr. Bryan Scheer gave Alan a straight up, honest recommendation – one which he said he would have given his dad or brother if they were in Alan’s shoes. Dr. Scheer walked Alan through all the work that needed to be done, explained everything and answered all of his questions.
“From day one, I felt at ease. I was worried about the surgery based on terrible past experiences but Dr. Scheer and Amy answered every question I had” – Alan Mcomie
Today, Alan is recovering well, getting better every day through rehab (which he hates, by the way). “Out of 7 major surgeries, this has been the best experience of them all,” he said. “They are truly caring here and they treat you like family. This gives you confidence. I would definitely recommend them to anyone!”
Dr. Bryan Scheer has extensive experience in sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, and joint replacement. Scheer is well known for his experience performing robotics assisted total knee replacements. Many surgeons believe that this precise alignment of the implant can lead to more rapid recovery and a more natural feeling total knee replacement. Learn more here.
Curious about a consult? Dr. Scheer sees patients in the Lander clinic 1-2 times per month.
