The ‘Running Brave’ group held a school-wide event yesterday, January 23rd, to bring remembrance and awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People. Several students, their families, and school staff gathered in the multi-purpose room at Arapahoe School yesterday afternoon as they prepared to run or walk four laps around the school.
Students in the ‘Running Brave’ group came up with this idea because they were affected by Selena Not Afraid’s story, being so close in age, shared Arapahoe School staff member, and ‘Running Brave’ organizer Paige Bowstring. “Especially with having a relative missing in our community.”
‘Running Brave’ started in the fall as a form of healing for middle school students. “When you are feeling sad, anxious, or have strong feelings that you don’t know how to deal with, running is an easy way to deal with them,” Paige said during her speech.
Special guest HD 33 Representative Andi Clifford also shared a few words at the event. “There are too many of our people going missing and murdered. It devastates our families and communities very much.” She shared how important it is to be safe and to love and respect each other.
