Airport Board seeking public input on potential new name for Riverton Regional Airport
(Riverton, Wyo.) – The Riverton Airport Board is thinking about a name change for Riverton Regional Airport to more accurately reflect the region served by the county’s only commercial airport.
The name that has been proposed is Wind River Regional Airport. The change was suggested by Airport Board and Fremont Air Service Team (FAST) member Mick Pryor. “The proposed name would encapsulate the marketing effort tourism agencies have been using and the entire region that we serve,” Pryor said.
Public Works Director and Airport Manager Kyle Butterfield noted that there is no time crunch to change the name, if that is what the board wanted to recommend to the city council, which has the final word on the matter. “Our three letter name identifier, RIW, would not be changed,” Butterfield said.
City Council Member Mike Bailey suggested a price tag be placed on the proposal, so that the costs of changing signage, the airport’s website, and such, be known. “We need a budget for this, it is a prudent thing,” he said. “The concept of making the airport name more inclusive countywide is a positive thing. Let’s make sure the entire county has a buy-in.”
“It’s important that we don’t operate in a vacuum here,” said chairman Dean Peranteaux via a telephone link from California. “I think we’re on a great track with a great name that fits the bill in a lot of ways, but we need some time to have discussions and the public’s input.”
Kevin Kershisnik, a FAST Team member and economic developer for IDEA, Inc., said he was in favor of the name change. He also noted that “From a business perspective, travelers are always looking for a city’s name,” but he also said he thought the marketing done on behalf of the Wind River County would be beneficial, as travelers identify with this region, both domestically and internationally.
The item will be brought up for discussion at the next airport meeting at which time the public is invited to share their thoughts on the the potential new name. That meeting is set for 8 a.m. at the city hall council chambers on October 20.
