#Activate10: Soroptimist International of Riverton, Girls Scouts re-start used shoe drive

Our community is large and wildly diverse, which is at the same time our strength and our weakness. #Activate10 is a movement seeking to increase communication between individuals and organizations across Fremont County and to promote positive action in our communities.

Soroptimist International of Riverton, in partnership with the Girl Scouts, is re-starting their used shoe drive that started in mid-February. As part of the ultimate Reduce/Recycle/Re-Use project Fremont County residents are asked to spring clean their closets and donate their new or gently used shoes. All shoes are needed: men’s, women’s, children’s.

Girl Scout Cookie sales will start this Friday and there will be a shoe drop off box at each location. This Friday, cookie sales will be at Smiths. Shoes can also be dropped off in one of the collection boxes listed below. Soroptimist members will set up Drive-By, Drop-off areas at the Riverton Farmer’s Markets each Saturday, 9 am-11 am.

In Lander, Drive-By, Drop-off locations will be set up in Mr. D’s parking lot on May 29 and June 8 between 11 am – 2 pm. Other dates and times will be announced. There are currently two Lander drop off box locations with more to come. Watch for new dates and times on the Soroptimist Facebook page.

The shoes are sold to Funds2Orgs, a nonprofit based in Florida. They ship the shoes overseas to developing countries, using them to set up micro-enterprises and helping individuals own and run their own businesses. This project keeps the shoes out of the landfill and can give them a second life. Funds raised are used by SI Riverton for their programs in Fremont County, improving the lives of women and girls.
