In 1982 Dave and Darlene Vaughn moved to Lander. They sold the family’s Popo Agie Ranch and then settled into the house on the same property up Sinks Canyon. Life has been good and hasn’t changed much for the Vaughn’s in almost 40 years, except for a 1930 Ford Model A Coupe. A mint condition Classic that’s now one hot Street Rod.
“In ’84 I brought it home to Wyoming for $5000, which was a lot of money back then. It was in perfect condition inside and out,” says Dave.
It was an instant hit in Fremont County and won its category in the parade several times in the late 80’s. But Dave just wasn’t all that passionate about his classic Ford.
“I tried to sell it in ’93 and nobody wanted it. In ’96 things fell into place and I decided to keep it and do some custom work to it.” That’s when Rodney Rohn entered the picture. Rodney was in the process of starting his own business, which now stands as Rodney’s Custom and Collision Center in Lander.
“I told Rodney I’d help him get started if he’d help me build a Hot Rod. Well, he said ‘sure,’ and the rest is history I guess,” says Dave.
They pulled out the original Model A engine in ’96 and started a 6 year transformation. The end result? A bright red eye catcher that’s been completely stripped down and rebuilt with an eye to detail. Under the hood is a fuel injected Ramjet engine with 360 horsepower. “We started with a Chevy 350 with an Edelbrock carburetor, but swapped it out a few years later for the Ramjet.” It sits a very low 2.5 inches from the ground and only weighs 1950 lbs.
Dave’s custom street rod has been in Fremont County parades and car shows since 2002 and consistently wins accolades. In 2015 it won Wyoming Street Rod of the Year and over the years he’s carried Lander Pioneer Days Royalty in the 4th of July Parade many times. This year he won top honors in his parade category in Lander.
“We love to show it off and even take it to Vegas with us over the winter. We’re in several shows there every year.” It took more than 30 years, but this classic Model A is now one sweet #10ride.
You can check out Dave’s street rod at the Rocky Mountain Rebel’s Car Show at CWC this Saturday, July 14th.
