44-year-old Kinnear resident eludes law enforcement last Thursday; now in custody of US Marshals

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

On Thursday, June 25th, at around 9:35 am County 10 shared updates as a suspect was eluding law enforcement on US 26 west of Kinnear, and was eventually taken into custody. The suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Keith Smith, of Kinnear, who reportedly stole a vehicle from the Pavillion area on June 24th, according to Fremont County Undersheriff Mike Hutchison.

The stolen vehicle was observed by a BIA Officer who notified Fremont County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Deputies on the morning of the 25th, Hutchison shared. “Deputies attempted to make a traffic stop with the vehicle in the area of the intersection of Highway 133 and Highway 26.” Smith “failed to yield and accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour” while driving westbound on 26.

FCSO Deputies continued to pursue Smith who turned onto US 287 headed southbound toward Fort Washakie where BIA Officers joined the pursuit. “Smith eventually turned off onto a dirt road and eventually stopped the car and surrendered,” Hutchison said. He “was taken into custody without any further incident.”

Smith reportedly has federal arrest warrants and was transferred to the custody of US Marshals following his local arrest last week. “Local charges are pending in reference to the stolen vehicle and the eluding,” Hutchison noted.
