Friday, January 10th, marks the start of the “41st Annual Wyoming Women’s 5-Shot Rabbit Hunt.” This event takes place every year in Shoshoni on the second weekend of January.
Originally named “The Bunny Hunt,” it was founded in 1979 as a response to the men’s “The Big Buck Hunt,” organized by the Shoshoni Chamber of Commerce, shared hunt committee member Jessica Smith. “The Shoshoni Chamber of Commerce turned the hunt over to the committee of women hunters close to 20 years ago, and we have run it since.” However, the Shoshoni Chamber is still a sponsor.
The hunt has primarily stuck to traditions established in the very beginning. “The rules have always been 10 bullets for 10 rabbits (cottontail’s only, no jackrabbits) by a team of 2 women with the fastest completion time winning,” Jessica explained. “We traditionally have a Youth Mentor Hunt on Sunday (any youth, boy or girl), but with logistics this year, it didn’t work out, but we plan on continuing that tradition next year. As we all feel, it is important to get the younger generations in the outdoors hunting.”
Aside from the rabbit hunt, the committee selects two or three different organizations or causes to donate funds raised at the event. Where the money goes has varied year to year, Jessica noted — ranging from breast cancer foundations to medical funds for past hunt participants.

This year, committee members selected three organizations they are involved with to receive the funds raised from the event — two of the three focus on different aspects of hunting. One is the Wyoming Game and Fish’s Access YES program which assists private landowners to provide hunters and anglers places to hunt and fish. “As hunters, we understand how important access to private property can be and wanted to support that program with the Game and Fish,” Jessica said. The National Wild Turkey Federation was also selected for their work in taking veterans hunting. “Our donation for them will typically go towards meals, lodging, and general travel expenses that the veterans may incur.” The third cause is to help raise domestic abuse awareness locally. “It is a common issue that is not talked about.”
Money raised to donate comes from the silent auction, live auction, and the gun raffle on Friday the 10th, Calcutta Night. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend that evening at the Shoshoni Fire Hall starting at 6:00 pm. Appetizers and finger foods will be provided. Jessica also shared, The Sundowners will be playing after the auctions and into the night until people quit dancing (or Midnight).
The hunt begins at 7:30 am sharp on Saturday. The public is invited to attend the Awards Banquet that evening starting at 6:00 pm. Tickets are available at Calcutta Night and cost $20 per adult, $10 per child (3-12yr), and under three are free. Keeping it local, Philly’s and Cream out of Shoshoni will provide food at the banquet.
