11 deer harvested as part of Riverton’s Chapter 56 permit

City of Riverton Administrator Tony Tolstedt shared a report on the Chapter 56 permit deer harvesting within city limits during the December 1st council meeting.

Between August 20th and October 31st, eleven deer were harvested by four volunteers. Nine of them were processed and donated to those in need. Unfortunately, two tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) and had to be disposed of, Tolstedt explained.

This was the first year of the program and was a lot of work to get everything in place. They had asked for 50 deer to be harvested over a 9-month period for the permit, but only a little over two months was given.

“By the time everything was in place, we had less than a month,” said Tolstedt. “Ultimately, a lot of work was involved. We don’t have to redevelop[the program]for next year. We can fine-tune it now.”

They plan to expand the in-town land area for the program before the next season. If you are a landowner within Riverton City Limits and are interested in allowing this harvesting on your property, you can contact City Hall by calling (307) 856-2227.

Habitat for Humanity donated the cost of processing the nine deer this year.
