#10Life: Midvale Ice Fishing Derby sets new record this year

(Midvale, WY) – The 10th Annual Midvale Ice Fishing Derby weekend, hosted by the Midvale Store, kicked off on January 15th at 12:00 pm and wrapped up on January 17th at 10:00 am.

Ocean Lake was busy this weekend likely due to the 163 derby entries breaking their previous record of 152.

The Midvale Store staff shared the following names of winners in each category along with the weight of their catch:

    • Ling: Jose Torres – 3.94, Shane Fehring – 2.84, Ashly Pinkston – 2.71
    • Walleye: Shawna Moysan – 8.06, Travis Barton 4.05, Travis Hiett – 3.96
    • Perch: Travis Barton – 1.10, Matt Post – 1.05, Torrey McKiernan – 1.03
    • Sucker: Ernest Lawson – 3.61

There was no silent auction, chili cook-off nor awards ceremony to wrap the benefit derby this year. Instead, they had a raffle to help raise money for 6-month-old Emalee Filman who has undergone surgeries for a heart defect and was diagnosed with chylothorax. All 800 raffle tickets were sold, according to Midvale Store Owner Lou Rochlitz.

In addition to the money raised from the raffle, half of the $15/per person entry fee along with cash donations will go to the Filman family. While there is not an official total yet, Lou has estimated between $8,000-$9,000 was raised.

Those who had picked up their trophy and cash prize money as of Sunday afternoon gave their money back to the Filman family; including the kiddos in the featured image.

It’s not too late to make a donation to the Filman family. They can be made at Central Bank and Trust – both Lander and Riverton locations – for the account “Emmalee Fund” under Nancy Filman.

See you out there, Fremont County!
