Survey says: “Alcohol at UW football games please!”
Despite more than a third of students at University of Wyoming are aged under 21: Beer and wine will be offered for sale at home football and basketball games beginning next season.
Shotgun formation not just for QB’s anymore
Citing fan surveys as a factor, the University is hoping to “enhance fans’ overall experience”, encourage fans to enter venues early and create a great pregame atmosphere, and potentially reduce binge drinking. Some 40 other FBS football programs (roughly a third) will also be selling experience-enhancing-elixirs this Fall. While the Brown & Gold is making this move for the green, how that revenue is generated may not be fully identified yet. Aside from direct sales, possible increased attendance could result. Some schools have also made the leap in hopes of attracting other outside events (concerts and sporting events). An underestimated expense by other universities that may not yet be fully known is the cost to sell drinks and enforce consumption laws.
UW Athletics did indicate that beer would be served using the innovative Bottom’s Up (this vid’s worth a watch) draft beer dispensers. The other automated dispensers–installed for fan convenience in 2017–include the addition of ATM machines at War Memorial.
While old favorites will be on tap at $7 per pour (Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite), Wyoming craft offerings from Blacktooth Brewing and Snake River Brewing will also be available for an additional buck. Presumably, for our visiting southern neighbors, Blue Moon will also be offered.
Steps taken to keep it safe
The plan to maintain a responsible environment for all fans includes the following:
- Wristbands/Hand stamps will be used to identify legal purchasers
- Random ID checks
- Limit 2 drinks per person per transaction
- 4 drink limit per wristband
- Sales will be stopped at the end of the 3rd quarter of football games
- No re-entry into the stadium will be permitted
- On-call public transportation (SafeRide) will be provided on game day within City limits
Twelve other steps?
Thoughtfully, there will be an alcohol-free section at War Memorial. Ironically, that is Section AA. Hmm…should be easy to remember.
