Belgium man on bicycle struck and killed north of Cheyenne

(Cheyenne, Wyo.) – 70-year-old Paul J. Dupont of Brussels, Belgium, was riding his bicycle southbound  on US 85 on the shoulder of the highway at mile post 47.5 at the time of the crash on August 14th, 2014. This location is approximately 30 miles northeast of Cheyenne and the time of the crash was at 2:39 p.m.

34-year-old Thomas C. Barnhart of Lincoln, Nebraska, was also traveling south in a 2014 Ford F250 pickup truck. As Mr. Barnhart approached Mr. Dupont, the Ford pickup crossed over the southbound white lane line and onto the shoulder. The pickup then struck Mr. Dupont’s bicycle with the front bumper causing Mr. Dupont to be thrown from the bicycle. Mr. Dupont came to rest in the west borrow ditch where he sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.

Thomas Barnhart has been charged with reckless driving and failing to maintain a single of travel. Further charges are under review by the District Attorney’s office. Driver fatigue and improper lane use by Mr. Barnhart are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash.

    Manslaughter at least. A car is deadly weapon. I feel for both families, but actions have consequences for both of them. Sadly, in one case, a family member is gone forever.
