(Ethete, Wyo.) – A fatal officer-involved shooting is currently under investigation by the FBI on the Wind River Indian Reservation just north of Ethete. The suspect, believed to be a male subject, was fatally shot by a federal officer.

The Fremont County Coroner’s Office could not confirm the deceased’s sex; an autopsy is scheduled for early this¬†afternoon. The identity of the deceased has not been released.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that the deceased was a likely suspect in a shooting incident in Pavillion at about 8 p.m. Deputies were called for a report of a man with a handgun who shot out the window of a vehicle, and he was reportedly walking around town armed. A responding deputy observed the vehicle with the missing window traveling on Blue Sky Highway near Ethete.

A traffic stop was initiated and two of the three occupants of the vehicle were reportedly compliant, Undersheriff Ryan Lee reports. “At this time it appears the non-compliant passenger was the suspect regarding the incident in Pavillion,” Lee said.

Wind River Police arrived to assist, and during the encounter the suspect was fatally shot.

“Fremont County Deputy Sheriff’s were at the location of the incident however lethal force was a result of actions by a Federal Agency and not the County Sheriff,” Lee said. “Therefore the incident near Ethete is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Investigation into the Pavillion situation is on-going, but deputies have determined that no one was injured as a result of that gun fire.

A roughly one mile stretch of Blue Sky Highway north of Ethete was until about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
